How dynamic path selection actually behaves.

An SD-WAN edge device at each site builds encrypted tunnels over every available circuit and constantly probes each one for latency, jitter and loss. Policies are written per application, not per link: 'voice needs under 30 ms jitter', 'backups take the cheapest path', 'ERP prefers the leased line but may use broadband above a loss threshold'.

Because policy lives in a central controller, a change is pushed to two hundred branches in minutes instead of being typed into two hundred routers. New sites are onboarded by shipping a pre-registered device that phones home and downloads its configuration.

The other big win is local breakout. Instead of dragging Microsoft 365, Zoom and Google Workspace traffic back to a central firewall, the branch sends it straight out — which is why SD-WAN is nearly always paired with cloud-delivered security, and why that pairing has a name: SASE.
